Differentiation and innovation are the keys for the hospitality and leisure industry for attracting more customers and increasing revenues, which could be challenging given the fierce competition in pursuit of differentiation. It also depends on the target customers of your hotel or resort, whether it is basically for families, business, relaxation, sports, all-purpose, or any other.  

Here are seven ideas on how to differentiate your hotel:

1. Concept-theming

Hotel theming could include many categories; in this article, we will present four main categories, which are concept theming, interior design theming, interior styling & décor theming, and architecture design theming.

Let's start with concept-theming, which is basically theming the hotel based on your target customers. Some good examples of that are the first Warner Bros-themed hotel in Yas Island - Abu Dhabi, Legoland hotels as the one in Dubai Parks and resorts, etc., which are apparently themed to target families. Other concept-theming ideas could be sports theming like theming the hotel for a specific sport or club or for the Olympics, for instance. Historical theming is another idea where the concept of your hotel could be themed for a specific historical era or event. This could be discussed during the planning phase in a think tank group, including the hotel developers, industry experts, architecture, interior and landscape designers, and any relevant stakeholders.


2. Interior design theming


The interior design of the hotel could have a great impact in differentiating the hotel. The concept theming approaches the general idea and concept of the hotel or resort. The interior design theming sets the details of every corner of the hotel.  


While many hotels tend to go for modern and luxurious interior designs, other interior design schools could actually attract more customers and increase revenues, which would again depend on your target customers. Some interesting interior design schools are the Moroccan, Asian, Coastal, tropical, rustic, Bohemian, Shabby chic, Scandinavian, French, Art deco, industrial, and heritage-based interior design. 3. Interior styling and décor

It just basically restyled and sort of changed the décor of the rooms in a way that made a huge difference and led to great branding, which shows that interior styling and décor could be another great tool to differentiate your hotel.

4. Differentiation through Architecture


Architecture is a very effective tool in creating identity and differentiation in general, whether for a city or a neighborhood or for a specific project like a hotel or a resort, or a museum. 5. Environmental excellence differentiation


This should have been listed as the first point given its importance and the attention any hospitality developer or designer should pay to the environmentally aware design. Recently customers could tell whether the hotel is genuinely working on environmental excellence or it is just basically Greenwashing or at least just using it for the marketing.


There are many "Green certifications" for the building itself or for the hotel practices, such as LEED, BREEAM, Green Globe, Green Key Global, and Green Tourism Active. Travelife, Green Tourism UK, Certification for Sustainable Tourism (Central America), European Ecotourism Labeling Standard (EETLS), and others.


6. Water play & splash pads


Good swimming pools have always been an attractive facility for hotel customers. Yet, the hospitality industry is sort of evolving towards good water play facilities and splash pads. It is recommended to allocate a place in your hotel or resort for a nicely designed water play area or splash pad. Here is a good example of a uniquely designed splash pad: Hilton chooses Polysoft for its Splash Pad. 


7. Go smart


This is a big topic. Yet, it could be another important tool to differentiate your hotel. It should start as well with a think tank group from the planning phase to identify your smart hotel goals. The group should include the hotel developers, designers, AI/smart hotels experts, hospitality experts, and any other relevant stakeholders.

A non-fungible token (NFT) is a financial security consisting of digital data stored in a blockchain, a form of distributed ledger. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain, and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs to be sold and traded.
